The Physiotherapy Hip Fracture Sprint Audit

The Physiotherapy Hip Fracture Sprint Audit (PHFSA) ran from May 1 2017 to October 31 October 2017 and captured a high volume of data on rehabilitation, pathways, frequency and type for hip fracture patients over 60. This data was then linked to the National Hip Fracture Data Base (NHFD) to understand the whole patient pathway.

Recovering after a hip fracture: helping people understand physiotherapy in the NHS

  • Average wait of 15 days, but could be as high as 80 days, before receiving home rehab.
  • Two in five people missed a day's therapy due to physiotherapist availability.
  • Routine rehabilitation planning was carried out for six out of seven patients.
  • Patients received 2 hours of post-op physiotherapy in the following week.
  • Only one in five services maintained the continuity of rehabilitation.
